Review in More Detail

We tried out the Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro headphones in different settings and situations to truly test out if it holds up to the headphone test and give you a complete Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro review. Here are our findings below…

Sound Quality

We found that with these Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro that the overall sound is pretty solid. They’re a dynamic headphone that has a classic 40mm drivers. With this kind of equipment included, the headphones produce a sound that is very consistent and has a great bass range. We also find that it’s fairly well balanced with good performance in the treble. That being said, we did notice some aspects lacking in the sub-bass and sometimes sounds like the highs are almost whistling.

When it comes to distortion, we noticed less than 0.2% which Beyerdynamic has mentioned themselves. Overall though, the sound reproduction seems very balanced and faithful and pretty great.

Noise Cancelling

If you’re searching for noise-canceling headphones these ones from Beyerdynamic, may not be what you’re looking for. In fact, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro does not have any noise-canceling properties. It’s an open headset so you shouldn’t expect too much to have sound inside your headphones.

With the design of them, you should expect them to leak a little bit so if you’re looking for something you can wear on a crowded train on your commute to work, these probably aren’t the right headphones for you.

The Build

The build of these Beyerdynamic headphones is different than a lot of other headphones on the market. One thing that we did notice Beyerdnamic did focus on when designing the headphones is focusing on the essentials: comfort, efficiency, and durability.

The Beyerdynamic headphones feature a very strong metal frame which is also fairly flexible for comfort. On the side of the hoop, the helmet has been made so that the hoop is completely adjustable to your head shape.

Very soft leather has been included on the headband and on the plastic covers on the ear cups making the appearance visually appealing and almost luxurious. The ear cups are able to be rotated which allows the headset to sit comfortably on a range of head shapes.

Design

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 is a pretty decent looking headset that is designed for functionality and simplicity. It is stylish but you can tell that that wasn’t the main focus when it comes to the designing process.

The headband is entirely made of metal and the padding cover brings a little touch of elegance to the device.

We like that these headphones are designed to be extremely durable. The open back model ensures that the headphones don’t get damaged easily and with the stable helmet design, it’s great for working out. Although it’s incredibly stable, we have also found the headphones a little on the tighter side as well, which may be annoying to some listeners.

Another area that it’s lacking is that it doesn’t feature audio controls, which is something we found a lot of purchasers wish they had included. The lack of controls is fine if you’re looking for using these headphones for studio use, which is where they excel most.

Features

As mentioned above, these headphones don’t really include many features at all. There is no volume control, skipping track button, or Bluetooth connectivity.

What the DT 990 Pro headphones do come with however is an extra-long nearly 10-foot cable which is great for once again, if you’re using these headphones in the studio, which is where they excel.

The headphones also come with a storage case that allows you to carry all the accessories included as well as a jack adapter for connectivity.

Comfort

Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro - Accessoires

Aside from the fact we found these Beyerdynamic headphones rather tight on the head, the comfort of these headphones is pretty good. With the large ear cups, they tend to fit ears of all sizes incredibly well. The padding is also a great touch and helps to reduce any pressure or ears from heating up when wearing them.

The headphones themselves are fairly light so you can wear them for hours on end and still be pretty comfortable. The arch of the headphones is also adjustable which means it’s comparable for a variety of heads of different shapes and sizes.

If your pads or leather cover get ruined or go missing for some reason, no need to stress. They’re completely replacement which we find to be incredibly practical.

Comparing to Other Beyerdynamic Headphones

There is a lot of Beyerdynamic on the market today. After doing a lot of extensive research and trying out a range of headphones ourselves, we have been able to compare and contrast different Beyerdynamic headphones.

Specifically, we sought after the top-rated Beyerdynamic headphones to see what headphones people are debating about when it comes to Beyerdynamic specifically. One of the most popular headphones from Beyerdynamic is the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro which is exactly what we’ll compare the Beyerdynamic DT 990 to today.

When it comes to the sound quality of these two headphones, the DT 990 Pro emits a three-dimensional sound that analyzes the intonation of music really well. The open design of these headphones are great if you want to mix things up, you realize how great of spatialization as well as resolution these headphones have.

In terms of the DT 880, this is a completely different style of headphones that features great insulation. They are a closed design which also features pretty decent spatialization and excellent bass levels as well. If you’re in the music industry and producing or working as a sound engineer, these headphones are every professional’s dream. Since it features a more isolated system, you can comfortably listen to your music without worrying about disturbing your neighbors.

If you’re looking for something not necessarily noise canceling but more isolating, the DT 770 Pro is more up your alley.

In terms of design, both are helmet design with the shape of their ear cups slightly differing. They’re both very strong and sturdy builds and have great finishes as well. They feature a detachable connection cable cord which means it’s easy to tuck away when you’re not using them. Although the DT 990 is great with the nearly 10-foot cable cord, that can also cause a lot of issues when it comes to the cord getting tangled.

When it comes to comfort, the DT 770 is made from steel and is pretty comfortably padded. It’s really lightweight and due to the padding, you can’t really feel the weight from the steel frame.

The DT 990 is lighter and has the flexibility of the headband which allows for flexibility in terms of fit and truly adjusting the headphones to be as comfortable as possible for you.

Overall Thoughts

If you’re in the market for something that is great for studio use or if you’re a music professional, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 is a great option. We hoped that this Beyerdynamic DT 990 pro review gave you great insight into the features and quality of these headphones.

With the great detail on high-resolution tracks, you can truly capture and listen to the smallest detail of a track. It features excellent sound quality, but with that being said, some people have found that the highs are sometimes too intense. The bass is quite good so there’s just a balance that’s needed.

However, as mentioned many times above, if you’re looking for an everyday headphone for your commute to work on public transportation, this is probably not the right headphones for you. Your neighbor will definitely be able to hear what you’re listening to and without any noise-canceling properties, it’s best not to use these headphones in a crowded space anyway.
